Unlike traditional infrared distance sensors that estimate distance based heavily on target reflectivity, the VL53L0X uses a Time-of-Flight measurement principle to determine the absolute distance to an object. BDTronics provides this compact 940nm laser ranging sensor with an easy-to-use I2C interface and level-shifted communication lines, making it suitable for a wide range of 3.3V and 5V development boards.

The sensor can measure distances from approximately 30mm up to 2000mm, depending on target conditions and environmental factors. Pin Description:

  • VIN: Main power supply input. Accepts 2.6V to 5.5V DC. The I2C SDA and SCL level shifters pull the communication lines up to the VIN voltage level.

  • GND: Ground or 0V power connection. The microcontroller, development board and sensor must share a common ground for reliable I2C communication.

  • SDA: I2C data line. This line is level-shifted, with HIGH corresponding to VIN and LOW corresponding to 0V.

  • SCL: I2C clock line. This line is level-shifted, with HIGH corresponding to VIN and LOW corresponding to 0V.

  • VXSHUT: Active-low hardware shutdown input. The module normally pulls this pin up to VDD so the VL53L0X remains enabled. Pulling VXSHUT LOW places the sensor into hardware standby.

 

How VL53L0X ToF Distance Measurement Works:

  • The VL53L0X emits infrared light at approximately 940nm toward the target.

  • The sensor measures the time required for the emitted light to travel to the target and return to the receiver.

  • Distance is calculated from the measured Time-of-Flight rather than relying only on reflected light intensity.

  • This allows the sensor to provide a digital distance measurement that is less dependent on target color and reflectivity than conventional analog infrared proximity sensors.

  • Measurement performance can still vary depending on surface properties, ambient lighting, target angle and environmental conditions.

  • The sensor communicates the measured distance digitally through the I2C interface.

 

How to Use:

  • Connect VIN to a suitable 2.6V–5.5V DC power source.

  • Connect GND to the controller ground.

  • Connect SDA to the microcontroller's I2C SDA pin.

  • Connect SCL to the microcontroller's I2C SCL pin.

  • Keep the sensor and microcontroller on a common ground.

  • Use a suitable VL53L0X library or I2C driver in the microcontroller program.

  • Initialize the VL53L0X sensor through I2C.

  • Start distance measurements according to the library or application requirements.

  • Read the measured distance digitally through I2C.

  • For multiple VL53L0X sensors, VXSHUT can be used to control individual sensors during startup and assign different I2C addresses where supported by the application.

 

VXSHUT Pin Operation:

  • VXSHUT is an active-low hardware shutdown control input.

  • Keeping VXSHUT HIGH or allowing the module's pull-up to maintain its default state keeps the sensor enabled.

  • Pulling VXSHUT LOW places the VL53L0X into hardware standby.

  • VXSHUT is useful when controlling multiple VL53L0X sensors on the same I2C bus because multiple sensors can initially be enabled individually and configured with different I2C addresses.

  • VXSHUT is not level-shifted on this module, so its control voltage should be appropriate for the connected controller and sensor logic.

 

I2C Connection:

  • VIN → Controller supply

  • GND → Controller GND

  • SDA → I2C SDA

  • SCL → I2C SCL

  • VXSHUT → Optional GPIO control

  • The onboard level shifting allows SDA and SCL to operate relative to the module's VIN level.

  • Use standard I2C wiring practices and keep communication wires reasonably short for reliable operation.

 

Arduino and ESP32 Applications:

  • VL53L0X can be connected to Arduino boards through their I2C pins.

  • ESP32 development boards can communicate with the sensor using the ESP32 hardware I2C peripheral.

অরডুইনো ন্যানোতে ব্যবহার করছি, ST লাইব্রেরি দিয়ে সেটআপ করেছি। সেন্সরটা সাধারণ IR সেন্সরের চেয়ে অনেক ভালো, কারণ কালো রঙের টার্গেটেও রিডিং ঠিক থাকে। তবে ২ মিটার পর্যন্ত দাবি করলেও বাস্তবে ১.৫ মিটারের পরে রিডিং ওঠানামা করে।

Good little sensor. I placed it on a servo pan-and-tilt for obstacle scanning. The ToF data is genuinely more consistent than the usual analog IR sensor. Works with my STM32 board via HAL. Just remember common ground and keep wires short.

এই সেন্সরটা আমার লাইন ফলোয়ার রোবটের দূরত্ব মাপার জন্য নিয়েছি। এখন পর্যন্ত সব ভালোই কাজ করছে। তবে খেয়াল রাখতে হবে কাচ কিংবা খুব কালো কিছু সামনে থাকলে রেঞ্জ কমে যায়। দাম একটু বেশি মনে হয়েছে, তবুও quality ভালো।
